While the retention and disposal functionality offered within the Compliance Centre is very limited at present, Microsoft seem to be heading in the right direction with it. However, the inability to 'soft' delete content that has retention labels applied is a huge issue and by far the biggest barrier in being able to implement them. As others have commented, the UX of this can't have been thought through properly. The ability to apply labels as a default value on Document Libraries seemed to offer the possibility of an almost transparent document/records management process where retention periods are handled in the background with no end user intervention required. With no Preservation Hold library functionality and the only way for users to delete content is to advise them to remove the label, it completely defeats the purpose. Until this is resolved, I can't see many organisations being able to implement labels as a way of managing retention given the extremely poor user experience and the subsequent support calls this this will inevitably generate. A huge opportunity missed.
