We have created company wide dynamic O365 groups. Users cannot leave the group but they can still unsubscribe from it. For the O365 to replace email distribution lists, we would need to be able to prevent users from unsubscribing from the company wide group.
If the users do not receive the company wide announcements in their inboxes - either willingly or by accident - the O365 groups do not replace distribution lists.
One workaround, though: If the email sender adds "@group name" in the email, the email is forced to go to user's inbox even if the user has selected not to "follow in inbox".
Thanks for your feedback. We are currently thinking about this. Can you please let us know what scenarios your organization uses shared mailboxes for and what options do you use. This will help us.
Used to have a distribution group with multiple email aliases (as my customer has multiple domains which are all being used for historical reasons). Converted a couple of these distribution groups to O365 groups and the email aliases broke! The O365 group was just not accepting emails through the aliases that had been working with a distribution list.
Being able to add and edit email aliases is a necessary feature! Please, add this functionality Microsoft!
You can now use a dot in the email alias. We are working on providing the ability to edit the email address of a group after creation.
For the ability to edit the email addresses, we now have the following roadmap item: https://products.office.com/en-US/business/office-365-roadmap?filters=&freeformsearch=27891&featureid=27891
Being able to manage email aliases for an Office 365 group is really something that should exist in the UI. Being an admin with a Mac, I need to make special arrangements to be able to run powershell commands.
This is especially important as it is not possible to add an O365 group as a member in a distribution list (that would enable directing other email addresses to the O365 group email address).
