This is by far the biggest pain point in Planner. I am pretty sure a lot of people is not using it in the Office365 suite because of the group spamming messages. This was easy to configure in SharePoint2013, why did you change that?
My team and I are working in 365 for a while but I need to use Trello as a task manager just because of this lack of flexibiity in alerts management.
