Fix the spellchecker for non-US residents
I live in Australia. As much as I love the US, I am not from the US and I do not use American English. But try to get Microsoft Word to default (and stay on Australian or US spelling) - just try! Some people like to be precise about the language they use.
Do you realise (not realize!) what a problem this is in an organisation (not organization!) like mine?
As well as trying to fix this problem myself on numerous occasions (searching on Google for a solution - following all of the advice), on numerous occasions, and then spending about 2 hours with Microsoft Support staff (who are wonderful), I have come to the realisation (not realization!) that the problem is simply unfixable. It is a Microsoft Word fault, and a serious one, that people just live with.
One (very lovely) Microsoft Support person even suggested to me that English is becoming the universal language. Of course I've heard that before, but this was the first time I realised (yes realised, not realized!) the scary implications of what that means! In the US (and Microsoft) there is a US-centric view to this. But I live in Australia and our English is close to that of the UK (England, where English began) and I've always assumed that the universal language would be UK English, but go figure.
Please can you fix this fault. If I set all (and I mean all) the defaults to English (Australian) why am I always forced back into using the US Spellchecker. As my Microsoft Support person explained, every time (yes every single time!) I have a new document sent to me that is not in Aus English (and they never are because everybody has this same problem) I will need to highlight the entire document and (again) set the language to Aus English.
And even with Aus English as the (repeated) default in all possible ways (and doing everything I can to remove US English as an option), US English still appears in my spell checker as an option next to Aus English. And of course it is shown first! And a lot of the time the Aus English spell checker doesn't seem to work, so I am forced again to use the US Spellchecker.
Please can you fix this fault.
