"Encrypt" RMS template: seamless read not working in Outlook Online and Outlook ProPlus
We have created a transport rule in Exchange Control Panel to apply Office 365 Message Encryption with RMS template "Encrypt" to emails having subject ending by " (crypted)".
When we send an email matching the conditions, the rule is triggered.
However, when the email is received in Outlook 2016 (ProPlus) or Outlook Online, it is not displayed directly as described on https://support.office.com/en-us/article/how-do-i-open-a-protected-message-1157a286-8ecc-4b1e-ac43-2a608fbf3098. Instead, a link to the web portal is displayed.
We raised a support request on this (#7596564).
Office 365 support told us to use the "Do Not Forward" RMS template. However this is not what we intended. We only want the email to be encrypted, nothing more.
We were told that the Encrypt RMS template should work as we expected and that this is probably a defect, hence we post in uservoice: here we are.
PS: I think it's quite unusual to submit an idea in uservoice for a defect. I feel uservoice is intended to submit ideas for changes to the product, not fixes.
Many businesses require the ability to print a message we send to them (at a minimum) for their own document retention purposes. And the RMS template is not compatible with Outlook creating extra work for us to meet our own document retention standards. I didn't even get to testing journaling to see that legal retention requirements of messages was met. Outlook is key - and we need to see these messages seamlessly.

as of January 2019 this still has not been resolved we are working with Fast Track during our Hybrid Migration and they can not help us with this issue they want us to open a Premier Service Request
With the new OME RMS is automatically added to any Office document. Encrypt only means to encrypt only....not add RMS. I know it is possible to have RMS removed after download for non-O365 users but not )365 users. RMS does not always give correct permissions to the O365 user the attachment was sent to. Also, we just want our attachments to be encrypted in transit and once the recipient receives, allow them to pass it on to partners. However, they cannot because RMS has been added to the original recipient only. It should be our choice to have RMS added to encrypted emails or a way to disable it for O365 recipients also.
Thank you for sharing the article.
I see in an April 11th 2018 comment that:
[Edited] - Inline support for Encrypt-only may be available in the Outlook desktop April monthly build. Once available, it will be published on the Office clients page (look for Outlook & Monthly updates): https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/mt465751.aspx?f=255
However it does not appear in the April update so it was probably postponed.
Anyway topic closed then, thank you :)
"The inline reading experience for Outlook desktop (Windows and Mac) will be available in the coming months. In the meantime, Office 365 users using Outlook desktop will see the encrypted mail as an html mail with an rpmsg_v2 attachment."
So, which release channel are you on?
Though I don't see this mentioned even for the monthly channel yet, so...
