Groups and SharePoint File sections should be more consistent.
Some of these suggestions are already out there. I think we need to see more consistency between the file sections O365 Groups and SharePoint - this is a major piece when it comes to moving or using a Group over a SharePoint site. A few items worth noting:
File types - we can allow certain files (i.e. .JAR) to be uploaded into SharePoint, but we can't allow that for O365 Groups. Users who want to migrate their libraries over will have to rename or compress (ZIP) these as a work around. Quite a hassle for teams who have stored these types of "restricted" files and want to make the move.
File limitations. The Groups are more restrictive with how many files you can upload. Another stumbling point for larger libraries.
Metadata. Why not? It's a valuable feature in SharePoint, someone who has put the time into organizing in SP has to throw that away if they want to use Groups.
Versioning. Another useful feature that some users depend on.
Sharing externally. You can't share with external users and in fact the entire sharing feature is dumbed down. No more view/edit links (presumably because those could be accessed by outsiders?) Those are very helpful because many users complain that they don't like to require authentication... the perception (which means it IS their reality) is that the authentication piece is more difficult to use than a service like DropBox. You really should live in DropBox or other file sharing tools for a bit and try to emulate their easy to use sharing features. This would be a HUGE win for both SharePoint and Groups, but for now, at least offering more capabilities in Sharing/Sharing Externally with Groups would go a long way in my opinion.
Just be more consistent between the two. Why is it I feel like we're doing essentially the same thing, but we've got 2 very different rule books to explain to the users?
Good news – we have a lot to share on this front. Essentially, group document libraries will have full parity with team site document libraries in the near future. I’m consolidating sub threads into this broader one:
Keep tabs on our progress there.
