Remove or disassociate O365 Group association from SharePoint site or Teams
There is no option to remove O365 Group association from a SP site or Team. This would be needed in situations where an established SP site or Team was accidentally associated to an incorrect O365 Group (or vice versa) and when an organization shifts where it is easier to re-associate an established SP site or Team to a new O365 Group.
This is a feature gap with the O365 Group service that will only grow as usage increase over time. To mitigate this gap, we had to migrate an established SP site to a temp location to remove the O365 Group association, after deleting the old site, we re-migrated the site to the old URL.
We need the option of creating an M365 group w/out the SharePoint baggage behind it.
1. We would like to reuse the same M365 group in multiple Teams and SharePoint sites.
2. Creating these extra SharePoint sites require quarterly permissions reporting: extra effort.
3. There are times where we want to use the M365 group as a distribution group for a dept: not add collaborators, but a dept Team using M365 might add collaborators.
a. News no longer shows the dist groups in the GAL (including everyone except external), so sending News to select groups of people in the company is now a challenge.
4. There are times we want to use an M365 group for permissioning channels in Stream and set up planners, but do not need a Team or SharePoint site behind it.

In a large organization, users will belong to many Teams and so a team decommissioning policy should be in place. That does not mean users don't need the documents/content generated by the team during the phase of the project, but instead, the Team is decommissioned and the SharePoint site lives on with the content.
This may be a use case for allowing disassociation of Teams from a SharePoint site.
