Convert Shared Mailbox to Office 365 Group
There should be an option to convert a shared mailbox to an office 365 group especially since the Office 365 Group is the newer better version of the Shared mailbox and there is no way to convert.

It would be good to be able to mix and match the features of shared mailboxes and Office 365 groups.
In fact, Office 365 group mailbox should be accessible as a shared mailbox

shared mailboxes are so much more difficult to track communication
and also Outlook with access to few shared mailboxes becomes very slow. -

We wish to use groups as a lightweight "service management system" to recieve and process incoming external emails addressed to different functions/departments.(separate group pr. department) It must then be possible for the group members(team) to process each incoming email, and categorize / flag status so that other members of the group clearly sees that this email is already beeing processed. We also need inbox rules to be able to auto categorize incoming emails so that the different persons in the team can process spesific emails assigned to their responsiblity area. It should also be possible to assign emails to members of the team.

We want to use Groups so we can share more than email but are stuck using shared mailbox because we can't create folders in Groups email

Convenience mostly. Groups are far easier to manager, whereas for shared mailboxes it's the mail and just that. Groups give a lot more stuff that helps converting users from a boring old mail system to so much more, including Teams
Folders can be created easily when the mailbox is added as a shared folder on outlook.

The biggest different to MS is that a shared mailbox requires a license, license = $$$, O365 Groups don't, only the members.
Its just a dirty way to double bill.

Technical debt... the hardest thing about moving to Groups is that we have a ton of shared mailboxes so are somewhat stuck there. Having a migration path would help us almost completely move to Groups.

You can do this. In the Exchange Admin centre on Office 365 you can set up users as "send As" or "send on behalf of". This allows you to reply or send a message as that group. You need to manually select that you wish to send as that group name (if you have permissions).

Perhaps if you could explain what the bad experience is, someone here could offer some advice.
As many people have mentioned, in another User Voice thread, without the ability to move mail into folders; using Groups in place of a Shared Mailbox can be problematic.

We are using Shared Mailbox a lot in our organization. Shared mailbox are used to send and receive email from customers. Lot of sub folders created to manage the email received. When new mail received it will be moved to folders based on customer / Agent. We have very bad experience using Shared mailbox and looking for alternate options. IS O365 Group an Option ?

too bad you can't "like" a comment here. So let me copy/paste the best comment below. Being able or not to reply with the group email address is a must. Most use Shared Mailboxes as 'not personal service mailbox' for the outside world. For example customer_care@ …

A better feature might be to have a third option which would combine the features of both shared mailboxes and groups, and have admin options to enable/disable some of the features.
For example:
(These are not available in shared mailboxes)
Allow use on mobile: Yes/No
Add external users: Yes/No
Delete messages for all: Yes/No
(These are not available in groups)
Reply as group address by default: Yes/No
Accept email from external users by default: Yes/No
Allow mailbox import: Yes/No
If the idea is that groups will eventually replace shared mailboxes, then these options are a must! -

We just migrated to Office 365 and have tons of accounts have to go through (shared mailboxes, distribution lists and resources accounts). It would be nice to be able to convert the shared mailboxes directly.

Please make the Groups as funcional as the Shared Mailboxes, including the possibility to convert a Shared Mailbox to a Group Mailbox.

An important feature that should have been added a long time ago. Microsoft wants people to use O365 Groups and yet has not made simple migration paths to move into Groups. If you make it easy, people will do the migrations to Groups.

We would like to move our public folders to 0365 group mailboxes but require folder structures as we keep these as records.Some projects can last for a number of years so there can be a lot of email records. Outlook is the preferred access route as it deals well with conversations.

Unbelievable that this is not possible yet. on one hand all support is saying, take groups i/o shared mail boxes and on the otherhand it is not possible to migrate these shared mailboxes to a group. Catch 22, but certainly not good!1
