Hide private groups from GAL by default
As soon as someone creates a private group, this should by default be hidden from GAL.
There are PowerShell CmdLets which allow administrators to hide/show the groups from the GAL. However this is a post-facto activity. With many users and groups this is very tedious and many times we don't even come know that a group has been created by someone somwhere.
Following up on the previous update, if a workload (such as Planner) is enabled for Outlook by default, we don’t plan on hiding those groups from the GAL. The only other scenario currently under consideration where we would hide groups by default is “Secret Groups”. “Secret Groups” would be hidden from everywhere unless you are a member. “Secret groups” is on the Microsoft 365 Groups backlog, but there is no delivery date available at this time.

Is there a status for this? Also will this include when groups are created in Planner and Outlook?
Did secret groups ever get released last year??

Bump. 31 Days left to implement secret groups. Any movement?

Last update to this post was back in May 2106. Any update as I'm getting requests from users to "hide" groups from the GAL. I know it can be done via powershell.
Hi, some news about "secret groups" functionality? When it will be released (we are in Europe)?

The feedback teams reply re 'secret groups' wouldnt help admins @ all. User created groups appearing in GAL cause users to send to incorrect email addresses/groups. Will end-users remember to select secret so it wont show, or maybe they want it to show in GAL when admins say it shouldnt - causing issues in GAL for genuine admin created groups. Payroll@domain.com & Payrole@usercreated.com, HR@domain.com & HumanResources@usercreated.com etc. Users are getting confused, emails which could be confidential in nature going to groups they assume are genuine & created by admins but go to god knows where & to whom until its looked into. Set o365 groups to not show in GAL by default or give us admins the ability to set that by default ourselves!

A "hide from GAL" tick box on the Group properties pane would be ideal.
Allows the group owner to decide when/if the Group becomes visible.
