Custom email rate limit for education
Request is for admins to be able to customize the daily 10k email rate limit per user to a much smaller number. In education, there is no use case where a student would have the need to send this many messages. We are constantly fighting the phishing battle with compromised accounts. Those compromised accounts send 10k messages to other internal users, of which several more get compromised. We would like to be able to set smaller "throttling" or "rate limit" policies for a sub population in our tenant.

It is finally a reality. Check the new outbound spam policy in security and compliance. You can now set custom policy for the number of emails a user can send per day!

Please make this a reality, working in the email abuse shop is so burdensome when a compromised email account can send out over 4K messages!

Would definitely be a welcome addition to our control & security capabilities.

Any updates on this? it would be an amazing feature to have! and surely assist MS by having less workload in terms of message throughput.

The University of Cincinnati would also like to rate limit. Our old policy restricted it to 2,500 per day and help reduce the amount of phishing attempts that went out if an account got compromised.

Agree. Easy tool to assist in avoiding blacklisting by throttling an individual's "sent emails" after certain hours.

Our tenant has ~100K accounts. Of these, ~33K are active student accounts and ~10K are applicants. It would be hugely helpful if we could throttle student accounts, and only leave a 10K limit on the few staff/faculty accounts that legitimately do mass mailings.

Fully agreed. We would like both a smaller limit and a rate throttling limit.
The current Microsoft O365 settings expose our university mail system to the likelihood of being blocked by RBL services. O365 should be capable of providing us with required tools to assure continued availability of the service. -

As a UK HE Customer with 80k+ mailboxes, over 60K of those would be able to be throttled to a far lower limit if this was implemented.
