Be able to sort emails by category ... like you could in previous versions of outlook
Can this be a thing already? My office mainly uses outlook offline with massive OST Files because they can sort by category. If there was category sort they be more open to migrate over.
Thanks David (on the May 31st)! Very well hidden feature! I have to admit, it is handy once you know it, but there should be some kind of a hint to find it.

It's horrible not being able to organize the emails by category as the previous version. It is useless for me right now.
This is pretty much the only thing keeping me from using the Web app vs. the desktop app. :(
It's hard to understand why this is taking so long to fix - and the fix needs to be everywhere, Outlook Windows APP, iOS, Android and Web. Categories are completely useless right now.
I love how they explain them in "settings" - "Categorizing your email and calendar can help you ORGANIZE and TRACK messages and events...……….."
If only it was true.
to filter by a category, click on 1 email that has the category you want to sort by and then when the email comes up at the top where your category shows, click it and it will bring you all emails with that category but I agree it is silly it is not in filter options!
Microsoft, if you want to compete with GSuite, you need to support users who understand the power of faceted categorization.
I too agree that O365 Outlook must to be able to sort by categories to group content.
It's a bit ridiculous to have the option to make categories in 365 and then not being abkle to filter on them. Putting them in folders is not a good alternative
Microsoft, why would you remove the old filtering bar??? Bring it back Please!
Microsoft needs to be able to come up for this quickly as many old School or even new school uses this sort by categories for a disciplined setup on emails.
I want to be able to type in a name or word in search then sort it by sender or date.

I would like to be able to sort by Name, Date, or subject like we use to in the old Outlook.
Just click on the category in any email you have labelled with it. It will insert that category into the search bar and filter your emails by that category. I was searching for this solution all week so now that I've found it I had to share.
My current outlook has a series of server rules set up to categorize my email. I'd like my inbox in 365 to automatically sort by category (like the app) without excluding all un-categorized mail. I see you can sort by specific categories, but 365 still does not provide the same "sort by" function that the app does. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Question now is how can I see the same in O365 mobile (android)?
Thank you Peter Bachman. I have wasted - literally - hours trying to find out how to sort emails by category, searching dozens of forums and tutorials. Your answer actually helped!

Another option in the Desktop Version of Outlook 365:
- scroll down to the bottom of your folder pane
- right click "Search Folders" and select "New Search Folder"
- in the list select "Categorized mail" and then chose the Category or Categories you want to show
- you can also display the new folder in the favorites at the top of your folder pane

To clarify my previous post right below, when I say, "Message Pane," I am not talking about the folder navigation pane where you see Inbox, Deleted Items, etc. Nor am I referring to the reading/preview pane where you read the actual message. I am referring to the pane that shows the list of messages and includes who it was from, the attachment icon, categories, flags, etc. That is what I am referring to when I say "Message Pane."

You can sort Outlook Messages by category using the following steps.
- At the top of the message pane, toward the left you will see "All" and "Unread". Toward the right, you will see (probably) "By Date" with a drop down arrow. Click that drop down arrow.
- In the drop down box, click "Categories". That will sort according to category.
- to right of the "By Categories" drop down arrow, you will see a directional arrow. Click that to move the categories to the top of the sorted list or the bottom of the sorted list.
