Change the color for presence held open by Skype for Business desk phones
Our company uses Skype for Business and we recently went from a traditional phone system to the Polycom VVX 410 Skype for Business certified desk phones, with Microsoft phone system and domestic calling plan. Before the move to the Skype phones, when a user shut down their computer and left for the day, the Skype presence was set to Offline. Perfect! Now that we have the Skype for business phones, which are logged in as the user, when the user shuts down and leaves for the day, the status is set to Away. Now, I know that there are multiple away statuses, but it's really not very evident to the end user, especially if they are just counting on looking at the color indicator. Under Skype for Business Basic (O365 Business Premium), here are the away indicators I've seen: Inactive, Away, Away - Voice and Offline Messages Only, Away - Offline Messages Only.
I don't have a problem with Inactive and Away using the same color because most likely, they user is just that, inactive on the machine or has stepped away. But I really think presence indicators suffer by using the same color for the Away - Offline messages only and Away - Voice and Offline Messages. In my experience, the Away - Offline Messages Only is when the user has shut down the machine (the Skype client) and the Skype desk phone is still logged in for voice service. The Away - Voice and Offline Messages Only is probably rarely used because this is when the client is not running but the phone is actively being used or within the phone's timeout period. I think having 4 different Away statuses is misleading, especially these two since they really represent a user/skype client that is offline.
I would suggest you either use the same color indicator as Offline (clear), or come up with a new color for Away - Offline Messages Only and Away - Voice and Offline Messages Only.
