SharePoint Online - Document Opening Behavior
At first in our organization documents used to open in Read Only mode but now they are opening in Edit Mode, I want to revert these changes as they should open in Read Only mode or add a feature in Document Library where users can select the default behavior for the documents.
Give option to open in "Read only" mode for the library OR per file. This will eliminate accidental edits to files that are accessed frequently.

I confirm that it's a big issue for our company. Please back to read only mode by default or add a feature that would allow us to manage this option as we want !

This changed behavior is causing a lot of issues for our organization.
Same Problem here! Please Microsoft, change this back or give us an option to choose, what the default opening option is: write protected or not.

What a mess: Microsoft changed this behavior! Now, if you are working in a workgroup and somebody clickes in an Excel cell, the document is changed and everybody who uses notification gets a message!
Please Microsoft, change this back or give us an option to chose, what the default opening option is: write protected or not.

I strongly agree with te comment below.
Also: Opening in READ mode gives users the right lay-out. I suggest that you can choose at site level or (at document library level) what the default behavior has to be.
Our organization urgently needs the default behavior to be restored to Read Only. We now have a scenario where documents are being accidentally edited. In some cases, document links that are shared via email to whole departments end up with many users "editing" the document when the intention is only for them to read it. This significantly increases the chance of someone accidentally changing the document. This is causing major document integrity issues and impacting our productivity.
Sure Users should open it in Read mode by default.
It can open in edit mode if other user edit document at the same moment.
