Disable the new AutoSave by default, as it can lead to a loss of data
The new AutoSave can potentially lead to a loss of data. If you open any Word, PowerPoint, etc. doc, there is an "AutoSave" that is automatically on, on the upper left. If you're changing some stuff around and don't want to save, it still saves it. Or if you delete some things and then save as copy, your original is gone, because AutoSave was on. This is a horrible feature and should be disabled by default.
Version 1705 (Build 8117.1000 Click-to-Run)
Office Insider Fast
We see two patterns in this feedback thread and are addressing them now. The first pattern is that users want AutoSave OFF. The second pattern is that the Template scenarios are problematic with AutoSave.
To address turning AutoSave OFF, we have implemented these capabilities:
1. To avoid accidental edits by others, the owner of a file can set it to Always Open Read-Only. This can be done by setting the file to open in Read-Only Recommended (File > Info > Protect Document/ Workbook/ Presentation > Always Open in Read-Only) or by Sharing the file without allowing others to edit (File > Share > People with the link can edit > Uncheck the “Allow Editing” box).
2. Users can turn AutoSave OFF for a file. While a document is open, clicking the AutoSave toggle turns AutoSave OFF for the current document for that user. The next time the same user opens the document, AutoSave will be OFF. If they open a different document, AutoSave will not be affected by their choice in the other document.
3. Users can set AutoSave to be OFF by default for all files opened in that specific application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Go into File > Options > Save (to set AutoSave settings)
These are described in more detail in this support article: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/what-it-administrators-should-know-about-autosave-88e0f80f-e5ea-441b-9c5a-259f08490ae7
To address the Template scenarios, we have released a new dialog reminding the user to “Save a Copy” prior to using an existing template if you want to save changes only in the new document. This is in the Production and Semi-Annual channel today.

Worst design ever. Unless you can have the conversion workflow transform all documents setting created in the OneDrive/Sharepoint to be open in Read-Only, there is no way to make change on tons of files migrating to OneDrive/Sharepoint.
And this worst design hurts excel most.
Great information, i was searching of this kind of information, thankyou very much for sharing with us. i also like to share some useful links here http://www.canonijcomsetup.com/
Does anyone know why every time Excel is opened the "Document Recovery" sidebar opens and thinks I've lost everyhting I've ever worked on? I save locally and there is no issue, but Excel thinks I've lost files everytime I use the program, and bugs me to save different copies or save over something else. Do they require you to save to one drive or something?
I got an email delivery failure when emailing OfficeAutoSave@microsoft.com - @edsavage is this still the correct email?

Why not change the behavior of auto-save so that the changes are written to a separate change document or section and only merged into the main document during and actual save event? You could even keep the change document attached to the main doc to track and roll back changes.
Please allow this to be turned off for all users in the account for all Office applications via an easy method. We cannot ask our users to turn this off, some will follow the instructions while others will not. Also we have a mixture of Windows and Mac and iPad/tablet clients.
This has already caused corruption/locking of some files.
We need this feature, since combined with auto open in edit mode when having contribute permissions, this can really do some harm to our data...
SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME
I found that I had to change TWO settings to turn off this "Google docs"-like mode for Office documents on OneDrive and get back to the basic functionality that I had with Dropbox.
1) In Word, Excel, etc.: File/Options/Save: Deselect AutoSave option
2) In OneDrive: Right-click OneDrive icon, select Settings, select Office, and then deselect "Use Office applications to synk Office files that I open".
Word, Excel, etc. no longer autosaves old documents the first time I open them on Onedrive.

It's a bigger issue to not be able to turn off autosave for online apps (Word, Excel, etc). It seems obvious that this should be the user's choice. I strongly request that this "feature" be fixed.
I read this: "change the way you work"
I'll be curious how you can change today the way you worked 10 years ago ? We have thousands of files in a tree structure and the dates are crucial information. Intelligence is thinking different ways of working and proposing tools that take this diversity into account.
Autosave is a very big problem when using the date system to sort between file versions. We can no longer trust the dates because as soon as the file is opened, it is automatically saved and the date overwritten. This is incredibly stupid and causes serious issues.
Autosave is non-sense when you know that an app like Excel still (after 34 years!!!) cannot manage Undo properly...
