Notification settings for Planner
When creating a task, notifications should go only to the owner and assignee by default. You can change it to:
Assignee & Owner
and this is still a problem in 2019.... thanks MS! 3 years and no answer to the community
Looks like improvements are being worked:

I am unable to see "Subscribe to email notifications" in any of my plans... Anyone else having this issue?
How does a company like microsoft not know how to organize default emails.
I get no notifications for anything, ever. I'm the only person in the team who has this ****** setting and no one can figure out why. PLANNER SUCKS!
It is pathetic that Microsoft won't get this functionality working. It makes absolutely no sense.
A year old, still no progress. I need the same functionality.
We stopped using Planner because of the overkill on notifications and the clear lack of interest in MS to bring in a solution.
you can unsubscribe to the plan but leave the notifications turned for the plan and it will not email all parties attached to the plan. It will only email the person that assigned the task when it is complete. people will need to monitor the groups section on outlook like another inbox for when tasks are assigned to them.
How far away is this feature as its the big con for Planner vs Trello :-(
yes, this should be implemented a sap.
You receive either all or nothing. When someone is just a user with minimal involvement he\she should not be receiving all the groups task updates but only their own.
From what I read these features are coming...any chance we can get a timeline? This is preventing us from rolling out MS Planner in our company.

I agree with these statements. it is ridiculous that the notification doesn't go out to the only person assigned. All users should not have to receive these emails.
Yes, good idea. I think this is needed. We are receiving too many notifications that are not related to our indivial work. Thanks
This is by far the biggest pain point in Planner. I am pretty sure a lot of people is not using it in the Office365 suite because of the group spamming messages. This was easy to configure in SharePoint2013, why did you change that?
My team and I are working in 365 for a while but I need to use Trello as a task manager just because of this lack of flexibiity in alerts management.
I get notifications that I have assigned myself a task or edited it, and conversations/comments within a task assigned to me notify everyone in the group - it's quite frustrating...

Yes. This is needed. I just set up a whole lot of tasks which then proceeded to spam the entire team. Embarrassing...
